There's So Much to LOVE in Chapel Hill!

Shop Small

Small businesses in Chapel Hill will have you wanting to empty your wallets solely due to shop owners' Southern hospitality and unsurpassed customer service. Franklin Street and Southern Village are two of the town's most popular shopping destinations, where you can peruse through stores that you won't find anywhere else. If you want to proudly represent the local University, Alumni Hall, Classic Carolina, and Johnny T-Shirt are some go-to spots for UNC–Chapel Hill apparel.

Downtown To-Dos

Anchored by Franklin Street's strong historical roots, Downtown Chapel Hill is a centerpiece for the community's outdoor happenings. Outdoor dining against the backdrop of live, local music is a frequent in the downtown streets. With more than 200 restaurants and retail shops, and an energetic night life scene, the downtown area is always hopping with UNC-Chapel Hill students.

UNC-Chapel Hill

We couldn't talk about Chapel Hill and not go into detail about the University it was built around—The University of North Carolina. When the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees chose the New Hope Chapel area as the site for the first University in NC, they then planned out a town adjacent to the site, which is now Chapel Hill. The Bell Tower and the Old Well are two must-see staples on the University's campus.

Secret Ingredient

While there are many things that make Chapel Hill so special, the town's restaurant scene is definitely its secret ingredient. Bestowed the title of "America's Foodiest Small Town" by Bon Appetit magazine, Chapel Hill is overflowing with sweet and savory flavors. From traditional Southern-style barbecue to progressive fusion flavors, there are plenty of options to satisfy your palate here. Sunrise Kitchen's chicken biscuit, Bin 54 Steak and Cellar's fine dining, and Hawker's Asian street fare are all local favorites.

A legendary bar among University students and area locals, He's Not Here has long been Chapel Hill's go-to hangout spot. Many may wonder how the bar got its name and there's really three different explanations—the original owner often avoided calls, people always call asking for famous UNC-Chapel Hill athletes, and worried wives and girlfriends call the bar, all to which the answers are "He's not here." He's Not Here »
